Estremoz
A white and noble city, Estremoz can be divided into two nuclei that mark its evolution: the medieval house next to the castle and a modern village outside the walls.
Estremoz has a rich cultural heritage, in which a castle stands out, with its medieval walls and the old citadel (13th century) where the Pousada Rainha Santa Isabel is currently located, as part of the Pousadas de Portugal network.
Estremoz became known mainly for the extraction and exploitation of high quality white marble. In fact, the region contributes 90% to the fact that Portugal is the second largest exporter of marble in the world.
Also famous are the region's red muds, which gave rise to the traditional dolls so easy to find in the city's craft shops.
