In the XVI century, the population grew immensenly due to the coming of workers from different regions to participate in the works that aimed to make the river navigable. This definitively marked the village and made possible the diversification of the local economy, which until then depended exclusively on the fishing activity.
Like almost all the localities of the Ribatejo, Montijo has great traditions, bullfights being the most iconic, as well as the Festivals of San Pedro that happen once a year in the end of June.
