Vila Franca de Xira
Vila Franca de Xira is known for the rigor of bullfighting fans, the most popular show in the region, which takes place between April and October, almost every week at the Palha Blanco Bullring. For those interested in the show, it is absolutely essential to visit the Ethnographic Museum installed in the Bullring, the cattle ranches and the Equestrian Centers of Lezíria Grande and Morgado Lusitano.
Bullfights are also mandatory in the main festivals in the region, such as the October Fair and the Feast of the Red Vest which takes place annually in July, owing its name to one of the elements that compose the bullfighter's outfit.
In its varied gastronomy, highlight goes to the typical riverside dishes such as eels, linguadinhos, açorda de sável, chicken cabidela and the lamb stew.
In Alverca, the Air Museum, the only one of its kind in the country, has a collection that illustrates the history of aeronautics in Portugal.
Nearby, the Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve is, from October to March, the place where migratory birds such as flamingos, herons, pilgrims, duck tailors, kites and kestrels pass through. In the countryside inland, the experience is quiet and the environment unpolluted, predominantly still small-scale farming.
